The Company
The Company has been
launched to market the unique range of seaweed products that result from
over 30 years of research and development on crop and seaweed growth,
led by Professor Cliff Johnston, one of five directors of the new Company.
His first studies
on seaweeds and plant growth started in the 1960s, stimulated by gardening
as well as scientific interests. In the 1980s, several studies were undertaken
relating to the potential uses of seaweeds from Orkney. This led, in the
1990s, to the development of quality controlled seaweed harvesting and
processing techniques in Orkney, linked to a wide range of international
trials involving both conventional and organic growers. More recently,
and particularly exciting, has been the high performance of the trial
products in two additional markets - sports turf and glasshouse crops.
From experience gained in these many years of investigation, the present
unique and enhanced product has evolved.
The Head Office and
production facilities are based on the northern Orkney Isle of Westray,
using freshly harvested weed from the waters around the island. The carefully
selected seaweed is processed without the use of chemicals.
Product modifications
to suit different markets, together with storage, sales and distribution
are based in Central Scotland (Fife); including provision of relevant
technical services.
The Products
The liquid seaweed
extract benefits plant health and growth in a number of direct and indirect
ways. Its main activity is the enhancement of root growth and many of
the other effects recorded are a function of the improved root system
generated. The extract also enhances uptake of essential nutrients and
other compounds across membranes, eg enhancing of uptake across the leaf
surface when applied as a foliar spray.
It has been developed
from first principles to optimise known growth promoting properties of
seaweeds - based on science not " muck and magic".
Liquid seaweed can
be considered the crop "body builder" of natural agriculture
and horticulture.
A more extensive range
of liquid products has been produced, combining the natural properties
with special chemical modification, particularly for the turf market.
Although these products are no longer pure organic products their efficacy
of action results in the reduction of chemical application, thence risk
to both produce and environment.
